Security in Wireless Networks

The objective of this lecture is to familiarize students with security challenges involved in designing and analyzing wireless networks. Students will gain an understanding of security problems, their possible solutions, and design trade-offs within most relevant existing and upcoming wireless technologies.

Dates & Location

  • Lecture: Mondays 08:15–09:45h, room 36-438
  • Next Excercise: TBD, room 36-438

Course Overview

  • Fundamentals of the wireless communications: broadcast channel and threat models
  • Security in IEEE 802.11 networks: WEP, WPA, WPA2, DoS attacks
  • Security issues in GSM and UMTS cellular radio networks: attacks and countermeasures
  • Security issues in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs): performance vs. security trade-offs, energy-depletion attacks, efficient authentication and confidentiality for performance-weak devices, etc.
  • Security issues in Radio Frequency IDs (RFIDs): key-exchange protocols and attacks
  • Overview of recent research results covering security protocols for secure localization, device pairing, and lightweight keyless authentication protocols
